I remember the WHYN 'bomb shelter studio' too well. I was the overnight DJ when it went operational, and not all of us were pleased with longer run to the restroom it entailed. After a few days, management decided that there would NOT be an ashtray in the control room (it's that round dark thing on the desk under the 2nd microphone in the posted picture) and almost all of us smoked! In retaliation, the decorative fake orange tree just outside the studio began to be filled, and refilled with cigarette butts. Mike Millard Ft. Lauderdale

I served at the Swansea, Ma. site during 1956-57 in the target tracking section (IFC area). I was not in the original group but was sent there as a replacement and trained on the target-tracking radar. The popular song at the time was "Old Cape Cod".

very interesting site. i am researching the various ground observers corps sites once located through out massachusetts. on line newspaper archives have some great info about stations located in the berkshires and on cape cod. i'm trying to confirm if a station was set up on mount sugarloaf state rerservation circa 1952. these locations were staffed as part of operation skywatch, with lookouts scanning for russian bombers, etc. do you have any info about the g.o.c in franklin county?

Thanks for doing all the work so we can sit at our computers and learn some very"Cold" history! I've already been to the CT site and have been very impressed. I am sure I will be here too!
